Session Submission Type: Complete Thematic Panel
This panel continues an ongoing discussion on forming the theoretical and methodological underpinnings for the emerging subfield of transgressive criminology. In the time of heightened discontent, new modalities of transgression emerge in both predictable and highly surprising, unexpected ways. The discussions in this panel showcase new and innovative approaches to understanding transgression in our neoliberal society. Exploring topics such carceral history and exclusion, gangs and secret societies, gas lighting from the “progressive” liberal left elite, and gang politics, this panel shows the potential of studies in transgression to understand our postmodern neo-liberal age. The presenters use a variety of methodological approaches – from in depth ethnographic methods to archival research – to understand various modalities of transgression in the modern age.
