Lifestyle in adulthood of abusive intimate partner

Thu, Nov 17, 6:30 to 8:00pm, Atrium Ballroom, Atrium Level

Abstract

The various typologies of abusive intimate partners have shown that there is no single profile of abusive intimate partners. However, there is a lack of knowledge regarding the psychopathological profile of intimate partner who sexually assault their partners. Moreover, few typologies have been proposed according to the type of violence committed. Studies show that sexual violence in a marital context is a risk factor for marital homicide and is positively correlated with severe physical injury. Consequently, this study aims to classify violent spouses according to their psychopathologies and the type of violence committed. For this purpose, 121 men who had been convicted of committing at least one form of spousal violence (e.g., physical, and sexual) were interviewed and completed questionnaires (ex.: MCMI-III). First, a classification analysis (two-step cluster analysis) was performed and three groups of violent intimate partners were identified. Second, bivariate analyses were used to compare the groups of abusive spouses according to the type of abuse committed (e.g., physical or sexual), the life style in adulthood (ex.: alcohol abuse) and other personal characteristics (ex.: hostility toward women, rape myth acceptance).
