Intimate partner violence (IPV) perpetration and post-breakup stalking among South Korean men: A latent class analysis

Abstract

Violence against women, including intimate partner violence and stalking, is a serious issue in Korea. Studies have found that the vast majority of stalking perpetrators are current or former intimate partners, and there is a significant relationship between stalking behaviors and IPV. Using data from the Violence Against Women, Focused on Intimate Partner Violence (VAW-IPV) study, collected by the Korean Institute of Criminology (KIC), this study aims to identify the patterns of IPV perpetration and examine how those patterns predict post-break-up stalking among 847 Korean men who were in a romantic relationship, but are not currently in that relationship. In addition, as different risk factors might predict various IPV patterns, this study examines how those distinct groups were associated with different risk factors. Based on the findings of this study, we suggest policy implications that can prevent further perpetration of IPV and stalking behaviors.
