An Overview of Programs Mandated by the Violence Against Women Act and Reauthorizations

Abstract

In an effort to address the criminalization of intimate partner violence and other forms of gender-based violence, The Violence Against of Women Act of 1994 created the Office of Violence Against Women, which administers grant programs to support public and private agencies, organizations, and practitioners and to improve services for victims of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking. This presentation will provide an overview of the programs created following the original VAWA and each of its reauthorizations, and how these programs have evolved over time to meet needs related to program support and victim advocacy.
