Exploring Neighborhood Social Processes in the Digital Age

Wed, Nov 16, 5:00 to 6:20pm, L402, Lobby Level

Abstract

A great variety of social interactions nowadays involve the use of information and communication technologies. Though community networks have been greatly reorganized by information and communication technologies in modern society, the role of computer-mediated communication in neighborhood research remains underexplored. This exploratory study attempts to analyze the user-generated data of three online neighborhood groups including posts, responses, and reactions from January 2018 to March 2021 to understand neighborhood social processes such as social ties, willingness to help, mutual trust, and awareness of local problems by applying supervised machine learning algorithms.
