Socially distant but virtually proximate: The impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic stressors on online victimization

Fri, Nov 18, 9:30 to 10:50am, L404, Lobby Level

Abstract

The societal response to the COVID-19 pandemic moved much human interaction online, increasing the risk of widespread cybercrime victimization. We were interested in measuring the changes in the online behaviors of Floridians in December 2020, a point at which the first coronavirus vaccines were being rolled out. Thus, we surveyed 3,000 residents statewide to assess their vulnerability to and experiences with cybercrime during the pandemic. In addition to asking about cybercrime victimization, we assessed the stressors of dealing with the pandemic—health, finances, and human interaction—on various cyber-related behaviors and negative online experiences. The implications of the pandemic on cybercrime victimization will be discussed.
