Is That Peaceful/Lawful? Exploring the Views, Perceptions & Experiences of People Involved in Protests

• In Event: Black Lives Matter: Perceptions of a Movement and its Impacts.

Abstract

Widespread debate regarding the use of force by police during periods of social unrest and whether it is justified largely hinges on perceptions of whether the protestors employ peaceful and lawful tactics. Importantly, however, the nature of what defines a “peaceful protest,” or a “lawful protest,” appears to have different meanings among different segments of the population. The disparities observed have resulted in accusations of inappropriate responses from the police. Given the current climate regarding police use of force, the numerous protests, and perceived police brutality, evaluating the different perceptions of peacefulness and lawfulness is critical. This paper will discuss research that explores variation in these perceptions among protestors, police, attorneys (defense and prosecution) and community members. The results of this study will advance civic discussion surrounding civil unrest events and how police respond to them
