How can researchers study pressing social problems such as gun violence while engaging those most directly impacted by the issue? What is an equitable research partnership? How can community-academic research partnerships more effectively reduce gun violence and improve public safety? This panel will seek to answer these questions and share lessons learned from the Northwestern Neighborhood and Network Initiative’s spearheading effort to make research in the gun violence prevention space more engaged, equitable, and actionable. The panel will introduce the Street Outreach Analytics Response (SOAR) project, a collaborative effort between researchers at the Northwestern Neighborhood and Network Initiative and community gun violence prevention organizations on Chicago's South and West sides, as a model of a collaborative and equitable approach to research and community partnership. The panel will host a discussion between violence prevention researchers and practitioners about their experiences working together, sharing their thoughts on how to integrate research and practice to more effectively reduce gun violence in Chicago and beyond.
