Prison Transfers and Their Impacts

• In Event: The Role of Classification, Policy and Parole in Corrections

Abstract

The goal of this study is to advance our understanding of the prevalence and impacts of facility transfers on prison social order. We use data from a prison admissions cohort in a midwestern state and multilevel longitudinal analysis to answer two research questions: First, what is the prevalence of transfers among incarcerated people? Second, what is the impact of transfers on prison infractions? Answering these questions is important for advancing knowledge about how seemingly routine aspects of prison administration, especially those made more prevalent due to the vast size of prison systems in the U.S., may undermine core correctional goals and have collateral consequences.
