Trauma Treatment in Juvenile Justice: Significant Strides and Remaining Challenges

Wed, Nov 16, 9:30 to 10:50am, L402, Lobby Level

Abstract

This paper reviews the published literature on the effectiveness of trauma-informed care with justice involved youth and assesses current challenges in adopting evidence-based practices. There is greater recognition of trauma and the importance of creating an environment for youth in court, in residential facilities, and on probation that incorporates trauma treatment. More emphasis and reliance on mental health screening and diagnosis have accompanied this development. The trauma narrative is acknowledged widely, but the rhetoric does not necessarily result in justice professionals embracing and implementing successful or research-based programs and treatment. Recommendations and future policy directions for strategies to address these limitations are included.
