School-based Discipline: Impact Persistence on Life Course

Abstract

Previous studies have found that negative high school experiences such as expulsion and suspension adversely impact individuals later in their lives. The impact of these events on future criminal involvement is of particular interest. Using survival analysis in the presence of competing events, we evaluate history of expulsion and other related variables indicative of social or educational exclusion to examine recidivism among justice-involved men. Survival functions organized by age group and race/ethnicity are compared. The sample consists of soon-to-be released, incarcerated men from a midwestern DOC. These results reinforce those reported in previously published studies.
