The purpose of the study was to gather initial information regarding the implementation of domestic violence firearm laws and procedures at the local level in urban and rural areas within two states: New Jersey and Texas. Interviews were conducted with community professionals and stakeholders (approximately 20 per state) who have high levels of knowledge in intimate partner violence/homicide and domestic violence firearm laws. Gaining a better understanding of the logistics, barriers, and benefits of implementing local firearm policy is a first step in developing efforts that not only remove firearms from abusers, but effectively keep firearms out of the hands of potentially dangerous individuals; implications for research, policy, and practice will be discussed.
