In this paper, we attempt to determine violent offender recidivism within prison. Although it is commonly understood that violent offenders are less likely to recidivate upon release, lesser is known about their recidivism during incarceration. The current study pulls data from the 2016 Survey of Prison Inmates (SPI) (United States. Bureau of Justice Statistics. Survey of Prison Inmates, United States, 2016) to evaluate violent offenders, by offense type, and their odds of recidivating in prison. “Recidivism” is determined by a history of write-ups for physical and verbal assault on officers and other inmates. To conduct the analyses, multiple dependent and independent variables were included. In an attempt to produce the most efficient results, several probit models for each dependent variable were performed as well as their average marginal effects (AMEs).
