Abstract/Description

Technology-facilitated crimes against children including online enticement of children for sexual acts, possession, distribution, and/or production of CSAM (Child Sexual Abuse Materials), and sex trafficking of children have an increasing area of concern for policymakers, law enforcement, educators, and parents in the global community.
According to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), the CyberTipline, a central repository for the online exploitation of children’s reports, has received more than 29 million in 2021 alone. The development of technology such as social networking sites, apps, and metaverse platforms seems to facilitate accelerating the alarming rate of online child exploitations. This panel aims to discuss the characteristics of online child sexual predators, the investigative capabilities of law enforcement, and the development of public awareness and prevention programs to mitigate this critical issue.
