History and Justice Reform: Square One Transformation through Reckoning

Wed, Nov 16, 3:30 to 4:50pm, A703, Atrium Level

Session Submission Type: Complete Thematic Panel

Abstract/Description

Over the last four years, the Square One Project has convened hundreds of researchers, advocates, and practitioners with the aim of changing the public conversation around the public policy response to violence in social contexts of poverty and racial inequality. The Project has examined strategies for reducing incarceration and expanding the role of communities in defining and fostering public safety. A key theme emerging from that work is the importance of reckoning with a history of racial exclusion as a pre-condition for fundamental criminal justice reform. This panel explores the power of historical reflection for changing policy, through a conversation among historians, reform advocates, and criminal justice practitioners.
