Session Submission Type: Complete Thematic Panel
An extensive line of research has documented the deleterious health consequences for individuals exposed to the criminal justice system. In particular, an emergent body of literature focuses on the health-related repercussions of spending time behind bars for individuals and their connected loved ones. The papers on this panel focus on overall health and wellbeing during the reentry process, particularly for older formerly incarcerated individuals, effects of COVID-19 on pregnant women, and depressive symptoms in the context of relationships when one partner is incarcerated. Taken together, the following studies shed light on particular instances where the reach of mass incarceration has affected many people from older adults to pregnant women to young couples. These studies call for more research at the intersection of incarceration and health and highlight several possibilities for targeting health and wellbeing in prison and upon release.
