Session Submission Type: Roundtable Session
The difficulties with writing in Criminology and Criminal Justice programs have become increasingly evident following the COVID-19 pandemic. While writing has always been of concern in the field, the movement between online and in-person learning in K-12 institutions has forced educators to focus even more on outcomes rather than processes. Additionally, within institutions of higher learning, instructors have lost some of the interpersonal connection that comes with being in a classroom setting, where bonds between a mentor and mentee often become the strongest. The need to communicate effectively has also become more apparent as disinformation is now a predominant source of knowledge. Panelists in this roundtable will discuss the importance of mentorship in writing. This will include how instructors can work with students on everything from informal in-class writing assignments, to formal, publishable, academic research. Panelists will also discuss the role mentors play in guiding appropriate and impactful student writing and research.
