Objective: Before an individual becomes a correction officer, they undergo an extensive background check to ensure they are capable of being an officer. The process includes interviews, physical assessments, drug tests, and a psychological exam. Sparse research has explored how data from these background investigations might provide insights on challenges officers could face as they begin their career. Data/Methods: We conducted Wave 1 and 2 in-person interviews with a sample of 206 officers. During the interview, health and wellbeing were assessed using subscales of the Trauma Symptom Inventory-II. Additionally, we reviewed each officer’s background check, including their mandated psychological evaluation. Results: Our findings identify key relationships between an officer’s psychological evaluation and their self-reported TSI scores. Conclusions/Implications: We discuss the implications of our findings for hiring and retention.
