Examining Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Drug Case Processing and Sentencing in Florida

Thu, Nov 16, 3:30 to 4:50pm, Franklin Hall 13, 4th Floor

Abstract

While scholars have examined disparities in drug sentencing, we still know relatively little about disparities in pretrial outcomes among drug offenders, as well as disparities related to drug offenses and drug types. Using felony case-level data for over 3,000 drug offenses, we examine racial/ethnic disparities in pretrial and sentencing outcomes among drug offenders. Specifically, we examine the interactions between race/ethnicity and type of drug offense (possession vs. trafficking) and type of drug (e.g., marijuana, cocaine, heroin) across several decision points from initial arrest to final disposition. The results of this study have important implications for reform aimed at reducing racial and ethnic disparities in the criminal justice system.
