DCS Mentoring for Success: Student Mentoring

• In Event: Roundtable: The DCS Mentoring for Success Program

Abstract

The DCS mentoring program provided mentors and mentees with a positive and valuable experience. Mentors provide career advice and serve as a sounding board for ideas, while mentees build connections and expand research and teaching interests. This program brings a diverse group of students and faculty with similar interests together and serves as a mechanism for scholars at all career levels to engage outside of the annual ASC meeting. Although many early career scholars have mentors in their home institutions, the advice, and support from DCS mentors can be vital in career growth as emerging scholars within the field of criminology and criminal justice. The varying perspectives from faculty mentors across the nation on scholarship, publication, work-life balance and graduate student life are extremely valuable to doctoral students. The DCS mentoring program is not one-sided. Mentors also express deep satisfaction with the program as not only a way to give back to the discipline and DCS, but also for their own growth as mid-career and senior scholars.
