Assessing the Effect of Parole Revocation on Prison Misconduct

Abstract

Institutional misconduct jeopardizes the safety and security for incarcerated persons and correctional staff. One population that has received little scholarly attention in the misconduct literature is that of the parolee population. This population experiences several barriers to reentry that may increase the likelihood of recommitment. In this study, we examine whether parolees’ recommitment to prison influences the odds of several types of misconduct. We use the National Inmate Survey, 2016, to understand how these individuals readjust to prison as compared to individuals’ first carceral experience. This presentation concludes with a call for additional research into the collateral consequences of incarceration.
