Pathways and Pipelines: A Review of the Juvenile Justice System

Abstract

This review focuses on the current state of the juvenile justice system through the lens of the pathways and pipelines perspectives. Our goal is to explore the juvenile justice system with a focus on the role diversity of experience, equity, and social justice play. More specifically, we present the historical and current context of policing, the courts, and corrections, in the juvenile justice system and examine how changes in demographics as well as the presence of systems of oppression, power dynamics, and structural disadvantage, influence juvenile justice outcomes from police contact through detention.
