Roundtable: DFC Conversations: Scholarship as Activism

Abstract/Description

The discussants will share how one can address such challenges to better facilitate activism in academia and juggle the demands to be in two spaces. Dr. Behounek will discuss the Clothesline Project, a trauma-informed, arts-based course projects "the Clothesline Project" discussed in a forthcoming book chapter. Dr. Cerulli will share how her team applied for an NICHD Center grant to prevent and respond to child abuse and neglect, using the AcademyHealth publication recommendations to create a free webinar series, blog, and factsheets. Ms. Weaver will present from her [in-progress] dissertation on how formerly incarcerated women who participated in higher education in prison programs define success in the community. She hopes that her dissertation will not only be a resource for academics but will be of benefit to community activists who hope to develop pathways away from incarceration and toward community integration. We will welcome others to share their work and close the conversation with policy implications for our work to serve the people we care about.
