Thu, Nov 14, 5:00 to 6:20pm, Salon 7 - Lower B2 Level - Area 3

Abstract

The South-West region of Nigeria has seen a rise in cybercrime activities among its youth population. This paper aims to explore the emergence of an apprenticeship scheme, "The Hustling Kingdom," within the cybercrime culture. The study aims to identify the factors contributing to the rise of cybercrime apprenticeships, analyse the structure and dynamics of these programs, assess their impact on the proliferation of cybercrime activities in the region, and propose recommendations for mitigating their influence. The research will employ a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative and quantitative methods. Data will be collected from current and former participants in cybercrime apprenticeships, and an analysis of legal and law enforcement records will provide quantitative insights. Understanding the emergence of apprenticeship schemes in cybercrime culture is crucial for developing targeted interventions to address the root causes of the issue. By shedding light on the motivations and dynamics of cybercrime apprenticeships, this research aims to inform policy decisions, law enforcement strategies, and community-based initiatives to curb the prevalence of cybercrime among the youth in South-West, Nigeria. The outcomes will contribute to the development of informed policies and interventions aimed at redirecting youth energies towards legal and ethical endeavours, fostering a more secure and productive society.
