Federal law enforcement agencies are increasingly reporting issues retaining senior officers, saying many are opting for early retirement rather than continuing until the mandatory retirement age. To better understand current retention issues, the study examines how internal and external factors, such as trust in organizational leadership, perceptions of media bias, political polarization, and anti-law enforcement social movements, shape the decision to retire from federal law enforcement. Drawing on a sample of retired agent association members, this project provides a distinctive window into the experiences of federal law enforcement officers and may enhance future agency retention initiatives.
