The field of reentry lacks a sufficient understanding of the needs and risks associated with releasing people after decades of confinement. Researchers have begun to explore the experiences of those who arrived in prison while still in their teenage years, the so-called “JLWOP” population, but much remains unknown about those who entered prison for crimes committed as young adults or adults. To fill this gap in the research, we have embarked on a mixed-methods study of this group that relies heavily on individual interview data we have collected. Due to statutory and jurisprudential reforms as well as administrative reforms that have sped up the parole release of those sentenced to life, a growing group of individuals who served long periods of imprisonment but who are now free. This provides the conditions for a much-needed natural experiment on their outcomes. Preliminary findings from our research will be shared.
