There has been an increase in the use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools among college students for understanding study materials and doing class work. However, the extent to which the use of AI tools is legitimate for submitting class assignments while maintaining academic integrity is largely unclear. The purpose of this study is to examine the use and misuse of AI tools among college students. The study also aims to examine whether there is a relationship between low self-control, AI use, and cyber victimization. Data were collected from two mid-size universities in the state of Connecticut – one public and one private – using an anonymous survey. The results have implications for a better understanding of the range of AI tool usage by students. Our findings can help inform university policies for academic dishonesty as related to student cheating with AI tools.
