Policy Analysis: Gun Regulation and Mental Health Support in the U.S. K-12 Education

Thu, Nov 14, 8:00 to 9:20am, Salon 3 - Lower B2 Level

Abstract

This theoretical policy analysis paper points out the pressing issue of the increasing frequency of K-12 school shootings in the United States, indicating that inadequate gun regulation and mental health support are significant contributors to this crisis. The paper includes an analysis of the status quo and potential alternatives, drawing on both domestic insights and international models, notably Australia's gun reform initiatives. The findings of this paper critically assess current gun control policies and present an array of alternatives to enhance firearm regulations and mental health support mechanisms in schools. Through a meticulous assessment based on predefined evaluation criteria, the analysis decisively recommends against the inclusion of armed teachers as a viable policy option because of the approach's relatively low scores across multiple evaluation criteria when compared with other alternatives. Instead, the paper advocates for a holistic enhancement strategy that encompasses stricter gun regulations, enhanced mental health support, and improved campus security measures. These recommendations are closely aligned with the principles outlined in the Bipartisan Safer Community Act, reflecting a strategic approach designed to address the multifaceted challenges of gun violence and mental health in K-12 education.
