Fri, Nov 15, 2:00 to 3:20pm, Sierra C - 5th Level

Abstract

The current study set to examine online and cell-phone behaviors of young adults and its relation to online victimization by means of aggressive and harmful behavior that is manifested through social media. The main research question that directed the study was: How has the increased use of technology—defined as intense use of mobile/ cellular smart phones—contributed to an increase in intimate partner violence? Various academic institutions in the northeastern part of the USA were identified for the study, and a sample of n=277 students from these academic institutions were analyzed. Results add to our understanding of how young adults use their mobile/ cellular smart phones, and how their behavior places them at risk of victimization. Specifically, the study found support for the lifestyle and routine activity theories. Application of the findings are discussed in regard to intimate partner aggression and to the importance of educating youth on the risk of sharing sensitive information on their social media.
