Research Advancements in the Assessment and Treatment of Individuals Convicted of Sexual Offenses

Thu, Nov 14, 3:30 to 4:50pm, Sierra C - 5th Level

Abstract

The Sexual Violence Prevention Initiative (SVPI), funded by the Office of Sex Offender Sentencing, Monitoring, Apprehending, Registering, and Tracking (SMART Office), is the successor project to the original Sex Offender Management Assessment and Planning Initiative (SOMAPI) and is similarly designed to bridge the gap between research and practice. SVPI work is currently being done to gather and summarize the research related to sexual offending, including specific prevention and treatment strategies, and disseminate the research in a form that is easily accessible to practitioners and policymakers. This session will summarize some of the key findings related to the assessment and treatment of those who sexually abuse from the SVPI project. It will highlight how conclusions have either changed or remained consistent with newer research, and the implications for sexual violence prevention.
