Exploring Restorative Justice Programs for Young Adults in the United States

Thu, Nov 14, 12:30 to 1:50pm, Salon 15 - Lower B2 Level

Abstract

Restorative justice is a transformative approach to addressing deviant and criminal behavior through accountability and healing. While several studies examine legislation pertaining to the use of restorative justice programs for adults and juveniles, the implementation varies widely across states in terms of the types of services offered. A population that has been overlooked in restorative justice research and policy are young adults aged 18 to 25. Thus, our research study looks at the nuances in the application of restorative justice programs within the United States, specifically those offered to young adults. We draw on content analysis techniques to examine organizations exclusively dedicated to offering restorative justice programs to young adults. By doing so, we gain invaluable insight into the diverse services offered and the unique challenges faced by each organization. Overall, this research project is crucial in contributing valuable knowledge regarding restorative justice services offered by organizations by shedding light on their methods, successes, limitations, and potential areas for improvement.
