In 2021, the NCVS estimated there were 4.6 million violent victimizations across the United States, and victim services were used for 9% of those victimizations. These services can include counseling, compensation assistance, and emergency safety planning for victims. Examining data from the NCVS can showcase trends for victim services use alongside other characteristics such as victim demographics or other incident characteristics. This presentation highlights current trends related to victimization and use of victim services, including trends over time, by crime type, victim demographics, victim-offender relationship, and reporting to police. It also covers BJS’s ongoing work to address gaps in understanding around services and their providers.
