Analyzing cryptocurrency transactions of organizational criminal activities related to drug trafficking in the Dark Web

Thu, Nov 14, 11:00am to 12:20pm, Golden Gate C1 - B2 Level

Abstract

This research aims to dissect and disrupt the operational frameworks of drug crime organizations by focusing on their utilization of cryptocurrency for concealing illegal proceeds. Drug transactions have been indicated as one of the major crime threats in the Dark Web. Based on the Department of Justice, drug organizations/cartels are increasingly turning to virtual currency to launder their profits. Moreover, there has been a recent uptick in collaboration between human traffickers and drug cartels to ship illicit drugs into the United States using virtual currency. There has been a lack of studies investigating the redistribution of money flows in cryptocurrency to identify the connectivity of organizational criminal networks relating to drug trafficking. To bridge this gap, our study employs crypto link analysis and OSINT tools to scrutinize the patterns and flows of money laundering in the context of drug trafficking within Dark Web cryptomarkets through mapping the connectivity of these transactions.
