In Sweden there is an ongoing discussion in the media about the illegal drug market. Although, several recent research and governmental reports have been published regarding the issue there is limited research on how those that have been involved in the illegal drug market themselves perceive the situation. The aim of this study is to explore how former prisoners portray today’s drug market in Sweden. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with former prison inmates with prior drug use. Three major themes were identified: (1) An increase of organized crime; (2) Tougher climate within the drug market; and (3) An increased availability of illegal drugs. The results show that there is a consensus among the informants that illegal drugs are more available today than when themselves were active drug users and sellers and there is a general agreement that there is a tougher climate. The study shows similar results that has emerged from recent research, however, what makes this study unique is that it describes the stories behind the numbers.
