Technology innovations has great potential to impact policing. Information and communication technologies are adopted in police work to speed up investigative and apprehension processes and to enhance exchange of information about identification of suspects, places of interests, vehicles, offense networks, etc. Simultaneously, the adoption of technology is often a significant challenge in the police profession due to police culture and funding priorities. The police and criminals are motivated by technical effectiveness to adopt technological innovations to perform their crafts. Police struggle to keep up with the innovations and prevent new forms of crime as well as to address traditional crime forms that are impacted by police training and the technology sophistication gap. This paper will employ a content analysis of literature and multidisciplinary approach to explore the topic through three main sections: 1) smart policing; 2) the use of technology (drones and artificial intelligence) as police resources; 3) challenges in their application to criminal justice and public safety. This paper offers explanation that law regulation doesn’t follow technological progress in practice, this causes many tensions in police work. This paper aims to raise awareness about technology as significant tool for shaping future of policing and the fight against crime.
