Through the Census of Law Enforcement Training Academies (CLETA), the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) is able to describe the characteristics of basic academy training for new recruits for all state and local law enforcement academies in the United States. The 2022 CLETA gathered valuable information about general characteristics of academies such as training length, general instruction philosophy, positions trained, and resources available to recruits. Additionally, it collected information about the gender, race and ethnicity, educational qualifications, and veteran status of recruits who started and completed basic training. This presentation will highlight key findings related to characteristics of state and local academies and recruits as well as describe future BJS publications and availability of CLETA data.
