Studies of incarcerated women often emphasize the role of “family” relationships as being foundational for informal social organization. However, little attention has focused on understanding the meaning women attribute to the concept of “family” in prison. This study uses open-ended responses among women incarcerated in two prison units to understand how women are embedded in a particular cultural frame of “family”. This cultural embeddedness is then examined alongside structural embeddedness of women in the prison using unique social network data.
