Abstract

"Diversity" remains a topic of contention in contemporary society. In essence, fostering an environment where everyone, regardless of background or identity, feels encouraged, included, and empowered to fully engage is paramount. True inclusion entails equipping individuals holistically to thrive at the highest level, ensuring that lack of resources never becomes a barrier to success. No one should be hindered from realizing their full potential due to a lack of foundational support.

Black@ASC began after a student's underwhelming experience at the American Society of Criminology conference. This networking initiative, hosted at the ASC Annual Meeting, serves as a gathering for individuals who identify as Black and allies committed to amplifying the Black community within ASC. Given the overrepresentation of Black individuals in crime literature juxtaposed with their underrepresentation in the field, finding mentorship, fostering community, and feeling validated in academic pursuits can prove burdensome. Through this lightning talk, we seek to spark discussions on cultivating inclusive spaces centered on empowerment, devoid of ego, and committed to uplifting marginalized voices.
