Queer Invisibility: LGBTQA+ Victimization in Carceral Settings

Wed, Nov 13, 9:30 to 10:50am, Salon 6 - Lower B2 Level

Abstract

The pervasive victimization experienced by LGBTQ2SIA+ people throughout their life course, exacerbated by factors such as homophobia, transphobia, racism, and other manifestations of power and privilege within society and the criminal legal system. Through an intersectional lens, we examine the dynamics of multiplicative marginalization and the link between victimization and system involvement, emphasizing the role of the juvenile justice system as a starting point. This presentation summarizes the research and current knowledge we have about LGBTQ2SIA+ people in carceral settings. Then, we discuss gaps in the literature and the need for more research on system-involved LGBTQ2SIA+ people with a more nuanced and inclusive understanding of trans and nonbinary people within carceral settings. To this end, we aim to engage in a discussion on improving conditions and mitigating unnecessary systemic trauma for LGBTQ2SIA+ individuals.
