Safeguarding Ourselves from Trolls: Strategies for Scholars from Marginalized Communities Who May Face Online Harassment

Thu, Nov 14, 5:00 to 6:20pm, Salon 10 - Lower B2 Level

Abstract

In 2021, the intersection of my academic pursuits and transgender identity resulted in harassment from people seeking to intimidate and silence voices like mine. In the time since I faced trolling attacks, I have been approached by queer and trans friends and colleagues whose work and identities were publicized, asking about what I've learned that might be able to help protect them. My experiences have equipped me with valuable insights for other scholars to be aware of: particularly those who are queer, transgender, or from other marginalized communities engaging in controversial research. In this presentation, I will address what I have learned about safeguarding personal data online and strategies for protecting colleagues and students. My discussion will include strategies for fostering awareness and mutual support within academic settings, to encourage a culture in which the pursuit of knowledge does not come at the cost of personal safety and well-being.
