Mapping the Sale of Illicitly Obtained Gift Cards on Telegram

Fri, Nov 15, 9:30 to 10:50am, Pacific J - 4th Level

Abstract

In recent years, the instant messaging app "Telegram" has emerged as a central hub for cybercriminal activities, particularly in the realm of cybercrime markets. One prevalent facet of this underground economy is the sale of illicitly obtained gift cards on Telegram channels and groups. This research endeavors to provide a comprehensive map of the illicit gift card trade on Telegram, exploring the various methods through which these cards are acquired, such as purchasing them with stolen credit cards, copying card numbers from physical cards, and deceiving unsuspecting victims into surrendering gift cards. The study also delves into the mechanics of how these gift cards are sold on Telegram, often at discounted rates, and identifies distinct typologies of gift card sellers based on factors like subscriber counts, types of gift cards offered, and pricing strategies. Moreover, the research sheds light on the presence of fraudulent actors within these markets, including "fake" gift card sellers who exploit clients by accepting payment without delivering the promised gift cards. By uncovering these patterns and warning signs associated with illicit gift card transactions on Telegram, this study aims to contribute valuable insights into combating cybercrime in online platforms.
