An Overview of Group Violence Problem Analysis Findings Over Time

Wed, Nov 13, 5:00 to 6:20pm, Sierra I - 5th Level

Abstract

Over 20 years, the National Network for Safe Communities has partnered with cities to implement focused deterrence based strategies to address different public safety problems. Central to the implementation the Group Violence Intervention is a set of research exercises known as the problem analysis. The problem analysis includes an audit of every violent group active in the city and a review of recent homicide and nonfatal shooting incidents. Together, these exercises provide a snapshot of what violence and its drivers look like in a city. Over the years, NNSC has conducted dozens of problem analyses across the United States. Along the way, we have learned about serious violence and its drivers in different cities. Using this source of data, we take this opportunity to share what we have learned about group violence, violence concentration, intimate partner violence, and juvenile involvement in homicides and nonfatal shootings. Using this information, we will create a fact sheet of our experience for the benefit of academics, system-based and non-system based practitioners, and all those who work in public safety. In this presentation, we will share the methodology of the problem analysis and discuss what we have learned about violence over the years.
