This study initially explored the experiences of female officers at the Tucson Police Department (TPD) through the lens of the 30x30 Initiative, aiming to identify the challenges and opportunities in law enforcement related to agency culture, respect, promotions, and parenting. Utilizing focus groups, the research outlines nine themes: workplace culture, work ethic, promotion, motherhood, leadership, mentorship, underrepresentation, sexuality/femaleness, and perceptions of the 30x30 initiative. The results of the focus groups highlight gender-neutral challenges that hinder both women's and men’s participation and advancement, such as the need for flexible scheduling, longevity pay, and childcare support. Recognizing the importance of gender-neutral perspectives, the study was extended to male sworn officers with the aim of enriching the understanding and support for policy implications. Recommendations from the qualitative findings focus on creating gender-neutral mentorship and support structures, alongside addressing the identified barriers. This inclusive approach aims to foster a supportive environment for all officers, ensuring equitable opportunities for career development and addressing the unique challenges faced in law enforcement.
