Conducted by the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) and the Urban Institute, the Census of Prosecutors (CPO) is the first census of its kind since 2007. CPO seeks to gather foundational information on operations and staffing in state court prosecutors’ offices around the nation. There are more than 2,300 prosecutor offices across the country that try felony cases in state courts of general jurisdiction. The goal is to reach 90 percent of offices in the country and collect data on key metrics and timely issues, including staffing shortages faced by prosecutor offices and other emerging issues. The data collection will include input on these issues from prosecutor offices. This presentation will focus on the priorities for the questionnaire, preparation for administration of the census, and the unique challenges with connecting with this population.
