From Art to Redemption: A Personal Story

Wed, Nov 13, 3:30 to 4:50pm, Foothill G1 - 2nd Level

Abstract

Bruce "Brew," an art director born in Southern California and incarcerated since 1998, transitioned from being a carpenter to embracing painting during his time in prison. Despite identifying more as a craftsman than an artist, he developed a profound passion for painting, particularly inspired by his love for the ocean and nautical themes. Joining the Arts in Corrections program at San Quentin in 2011, Brew became instrumental in revitalizing the prison's art studio and emerged as a leading artist on the Mural Crew. Dedicating much of his free time to community service, Brew engages in various activities such as donating his artwork, mentoring others, and facilitating self-help groups. He attributes his transformative journey to the support and encouragement of kind-hearted staff members who have provided him with opportunities to give back. Brew's interests extend beyond art to include handball, dominoes, cooking, and socializing, with a particular eagerness for receiving feedback on his creative endeavors. His story exemplifies the power of artistic expression and community engagement in fostering personal growth and positive impact, even within the confines of incarceration. Additionally, his experiences have been featured in Humans of San Quentin, highlighting the resilience and talent found within the prison community.
