Fri, Nov 15, 2:00 to 3:20pm, Sierra A - 5th Level

Abstract

The experiences of being over-policed or under-policed can significantly impact perceptions of police legitimacy and safety. Positive perceptions of the police are more prevalent in communities where White individuals are the majority, whereas diverse communities often report higher instances of over-policing or under-policing. This paper presents a systematic review of the impact of over-policing or under-policing on perceptions of police, focusing on how these practices influence trust in law enforcement or attitudes towards police across diverse communities. This review aims to shed light on the influence of over-policed or under-policed in diverse communities, offering insights into how law enforcement practices can be improved.
