How Do Property Managers Prevent Crime? Insights From Sweden’s Residential Sector

Wed, Nov 13, 12:30 to 1:50pm, Nob Hill A - Lower B2 Level

Abstract

Place management theory suggests that how places are managed can affect the likelihood of crime. Key to this approach is the understanding of the role of place managers (those who control, supervise, or own spaces) in detecting and deterring potential criminal behaviors. We report the results of a survey directed to property managers in Sweden. We asked them about their daily tasks and those tasks connected to crime prevention. By examining the role of property managers in Sweden, a country with unique urban planning traditions, we provide insights into how different management practices can influence crime and exemplifies the significance of place managers in the Scandinavian context.
