Understanding Employers Perceptions of Employee Workplace Behavior on Hiring Decisions

Wed, Nov 13, 11:00am to 12:20pm, Foothill B - 2nd Level

Abstract

Individuals with a criminal record face significant barriers to employment as employers are often reluctant to hire from this population. Despite employers' pivotal role in the hiring process, there is little research considering how employer’s perceptions of individuals behavior in the workplace can impact their willingness to hire (WTH). Using a nationwide sample of 591 hiring managers across the United States, we use an experimental design to assess the factors that influence employer’s perceptions of employee behavior in the workplace. This study may inform policymakers and jobseekers with a criminal record on how to overcome negative employer perceptions to increase the likelihood of being hired.
