Racial Disparity in Stop & Search: A San Francisco Perspective

Wed, Nov 13, 9:30 to 10:50am, Foothill C - 2nd Level

Abstract

The population-based rates of stop and search by ethnicity are much lower for whites than for non-white persons. This disparity raises challenges to police legitimacy, regardless of differences in victimisation rates by ethnicity. This presentation provides qualitative analysis of the discussions between police and the public, framing a possible opportunity for experiments with innovations.
