Research on Protective and Risk Factors Regarding Children of Parents with Extremist Beliefs (Dutch Context)

Wed, Nov 13, 3:30 to 4:50pm, Foothill E - 2nd Level

Abstract

Purpose: While the study of radicalization and the development of extremist beliefs has increasingly focused on risk factors within the family domain, little research has been done on whether and how extremist beliefs held by parents affect their children. Both practice and science show that it is rather complicated to get a good picture of families in which at least one parent holds extremist beliefs. This is problematic as such information is essential for supporting these children and families. Therefore, more knowledge on this is necessary.
Methodology: This explorative study seeks to gain more insights into these families through analyzing files of the Dutch Child Care and protection Board concerning children of whom at least one parent holds extremist views. Specific attention will be paid to family characteristics and – dynamics, as well as risk and protective factors. Moreover, we will compare families holding different ideologies.
Findings: The preliminary results of the research indicate relevant similarities, but also differences between families with different ideologies that are relevant for supporting these families. Findings will be discussed in light of international research on the influence of extremist beliefs of parents on their children and legal frameworks for the prevention of harm to children.
